Team T-Shirt Made with Cricut Iron on Glitter Vinyl and Some Helpful Tips

Tips for Using Cricut Glitter Iron on Vinyl

One of my latest projects was also probably my most challenging.  Savana has her own little fan club.  So, ever since last summer and all of her appearances at Java Joe’s they wanted team t-shirts.
Once they knew Savana was going to do Diva Quest I knew I would be making t-shirts.  Inspired by the song she chose, “Gold”  by Britt Nicole I was definitely using glitter.

repeatingdoubleborder

I found Gold Glitter Iron On Vinyl made by Cricut at Michaels.  I wish I had shopped around online, but I went to Michaels and paid $17.99. I was shocked when I opened it up and it was a single sheet 12×19.  I needed to make 6 shirts. This is where Cricut Craft Room is a GOD SEND!

imageThe Process

I used the crown from “Gypsy Wanderings” and my most favorite font ever from the Close to my Heart Cricut Artbooking cartridge.  Because I was able to maneuver the images and turn them a bit, I was able to fit more than If I had not. I used a 12×24 mat and knew exactly where to place my images so they did not go past the 19” mark.

Whenever you are creating a t-shirt you need to flip the image. To do this on the Craft Room you will need to click on the image and then click the flip-h icon at the top.
Cricut Craft Room Graphic

Otherwise you will find the flip key right on your Cricut Machine.
Another very important thing to note is that the piece comes with a plastic that is the liner. Some other companies will have something like that but it will be use as a protectant.  LEAVE the clear plastic on and lay the glitter side down on the mat.
20140129_131214
I used my trusty Cricut Expression.  Depending on what machine you are using you will need to make adjustments.

UPDATE: If you have a Cricut Explore I (did not at the time, but now I do!) skip this part, you lucky dog! Your machine already knows this info. Man, I love my Cricut Explore so much!

The instructions on the back of the Cricut vinyl told me to do medium or 3 on the pressure as well as the blade depth. I followed that and it did not cut all the way through. I fed it back into the machine a couple more times and it was still very hard to see the cuts and they would not lift up from the vinyl.  I have used regular vinyl and iron on without glitter, and using 3 or med has always been suffice.  For this project I was limited on time and materials. So I had to make do.

It was a nightmare.  To save yourself time and pain, be sure to test a piece.

When you lift up the vinyl, the words that you want should be the only thing left on the clear plastic.  Then you will need to “weed” out the insides of letters and anything else you don’t need. Cricut has a weeding tool, but I just use a paper piercer.  That is my “Jack of all Trades” tool.

Update: I bought a Cricut Weeding Tool. It is so worth it. I am just sayin’

HELPFUL TIPS

  • I cut around the crown and the words individually, so there was a small edge of plastic.
  • I used a regular cotton shirt from Wal-Mart.
  • Washed, dried and ironed prior to.
  • Lay shirt on ironing board and smooth out.
  • Lay words and images down.
  • Set iron at a high temperature and do not use steam.
  • Cricut instructed me to use a white cotton towel over it while ironing. I had a Teflon sheet from the last time I bought iron on vinyl.  It was highly recommended by www.vinylsuperstore.com. It worked a lot quicker than the towel did.
  • Let it cool before you lift up plastic.
  • If a piece is not quite attached, lay Teflon sheet or towel over it and apply heat again.

20140131_085216

Here again is the finished product. Despite the problems I had I was really quite pleased with the final results.  The glitter did not rub off and when it was heated up, it created a beautiful shiny gold that looked very professional.

20140201_205923
For those of you who might not know, Savana did a fantastic job. She didn’t win this time, but she already knows what song she wants to do next year.  I wonder if I’ll be making t-shirts again.
Anyway, I hope you have found this helpful. It was such a fun way to add a personal touch.  I would love to know if you have used the Glitter Iron On Vinyl and had any advice. Please feel free to leave a comment. I would love to see what you make!

Until Next Time-
Be Blessed!

Diva Quest Singing Competition in Waterford Feb. 1

1 / 24 / 148 / 10 / 15

What has been keeping me so busy these days?  A lot of family stuff! One upcoming event that I am super excited about is the Diva Quest Competition one week from tomorrow!  Savana is one of the ten finalists that will be performing. Diva Quest It has been a really amazing and will prove to be a defining moment for Savana and many of these girls.  Not for fame and fortune by any means. It is about the experience!  The women from Riverport Chorus have been mentoring her and coaching her have been a breath of fresh air!  They are so encouraging and positive. The contestants have been coached on everything from their voice to their wardrobe. Encouraging them in a loving and nurturing manner that has only made them better.  They are building confidence and finding out what they really are capable of.  That doesn’t always happen in the hustle and bustle of choir concerts, festivals and music classes. This is such a rare opportunity. Savana’s song has a powerful message and I can’t wait to see her share it on stage!  There will also be a performance by a very talented acapella group, the Madhatters from UW Madison. So spread the word and I hope to see you there! Until Then- Capture Life! Sarita

Welcome to our CTMH Stamp of the Month Blog Hop.  If you came from
Alyson’s Blog then you are on the right path!

What a great way to start the new year! We have  Cross Stitch Wishes,a set of 13 stamps. It has a lot of different images with flowers, hearts, and lot of little extras this is one to use all throughout the year!

I am participating in a Valentine event next month so this stamp worked perfect. I made a simple card using the gorgeous teal shimmer trim that is included in the the Cloud Nine Card Kit. I also added the Lagoon Houndstooth Washi Tape to add interest and a subtle pattern.  Placed a few Aqua Dots to draw attention to the small stamped images and it was complete.

3 Simple Ornament Up-Dos (from store bought to spectacular!)

12 / 22 / 138 / 10 / 15

3 Simple Ornament Updos A few weeks ago my friend, Kris, asked if I could “Saritify” some ornaments. Her word, not mine.  She bought some simple ornaments and then some ribbons, bells, red berry stems with silver and a few other things.  My job was to add some character and personalization. So, this was my starting point.   20131211_132022 She bought 5 of each ornament. She got these cork stars from Target. 14885650_201309271843             20131214_141622 I Just hot glued a simple band of ribbon around the star and added a bow in the center.  The corks already have some glitter on them so the glitter in the ribbon matched perfectly.   14774727_20131011154320131214_141704 The key was silver not gold when I started. I wrapped glitter ribbon around it.  Secured it with hot glue and couldn’t resist adding a little bling that I already had.   20131214_141851 These started out as plain wooden stars with glitter in the center.  The first one I added a gold ribbon around the outside an then a simple knot at the top. That is what I call a cheater bow.   20131214_141753   I grabbed a couple stems and cut them down.  I used hot glue to tack them down to the center and then covered it with the small handmade bow.  To make this I used a fork.  It was one of my first pins ever. But now I can’t find it. Repinned, you can see it on my Crafty Tips Pinterest Board It worked!  Even though I chose a wider ribbon, our fabulous striped chevron, it worked well. I hope this inspires you!  Shop your own crafting stash, and consider the possibilities!  It might be too late now, but be sure to Pin it for next year! Until Next Time- Capture Life! Sarita

Celebrate Christmas Madrigal Style in Waterford Dec. 14-15, 2013

12 / 5 / 138 / 10 / 15

There has been much excitement around our house lately. Lately? Well, yeah we are always pretty fired up here at “Team Schraeder” Headquarters, but that makes life fun. When Christmas music has been playing on since October, you kinda gotta roll with it!  Between Savana’s rehearsals for Madrigals and Sofie’s incessant practicing for her school concert we have had Christmas music playing non stop since October.  2013-11-23_14-43-30_620 We got a little sneak peek at Savana’s Madrigals costume a few weeks ago. She donned her costume to promote the show at the craft fair a couple weeks ago.  Now this is playing DRESS UP!! Aren’t the costumes gorgeous!? If you live in Waterford you may have heard of the Madrigals Dinner that is held at the High School. Did you know it’s the 29th Annual this year!?  You may know it’s a pretty big deal and sells out in no time. You might even think you already missed your chance, but guess what? You didn’t! They still have some tickets left, but you need to reserve your seat now! Mads You really don’t want to miss it!  We attended last year for the first time and I was blown away! Yes, it is a complete musical production that is hard to believe put on by high school students!! However, it is also an experience!  You are literally transported back in time to the year 1593! Not only will you enjoy a 9 course meal by candlelight, you will be entertained by jesters, bag pipers, and of course the outstanding Madrigal Singers.  This year, as the newly appointed, President- Elect of the Waterford Choir Parents Association I have seen the behind the scenes and it is IMPRESSIVE! It takes a village to make this happen.  Sewing, decorating, getting the 9 course meal just right, getting the all of the student servers in place and of course the MUSIC! It is phenomenal! I am not just saying that because my child is performing. Even though she did snag a solo.Winking smile ( proud mama moment). So, thanks for stopping by my blog.  Please feel free to share this with your family and friends. Let’s get the largest fundraiser for the Waterford Choir Parents Association sold out!!  See you there!! Mads Until Next Time- Capture Life! Sarita

Christmas Wooden Block Decoration with CTMH Sparkle and Shine!

12 / 2 / 138 / 10 / 15

I can’t believe it’s been 2 weeks since my Christmas at the Cottage Event.  If you missed it I will be posting some projects and how I made them over the next week or so. So, sometimes when people ooh and aahh over my projects I am little embarrassed. All I do is work with products that were designed to work together.  I have said it before and I will say it again. Using Close to my Heart products is as easy as Garanimals were for me as a kid! Remember matching up the labels and you couldn’t go wrong? That line was created to make it easier for children to get themselves dressed. That is how I feel about CTMH. I can’t go wrong.  You can’t go wrong! Case in point…my latest wooden block decoration projects. I really love wooden block decorations. They look great on a buffet table and can be used to give items on your mantle a boost.  Here is my finished project. A set of two. 2013-11-22_16-58-06_298 I happen to have a TON of wooden blocks because one day about 7 years ago I asked my husband to cut some blocks for me. He sure did! So I keep making stuff. First I painted 2 blocks red with plain ol’ acrylic paint. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do, but I knew it would be a set. In the past I have used vinyl or rub ons to decorate. Then I spotted my Sparkle & Shine Complements Dimensional Elements.  They are made of a chipboard material so they are great for 3D projects like these! Or for cards, scrapbook pages etc.. get where I am going with this? X7176C I also grabbed these fun bling Sparkle Holiday Shapes. As I played with these I realized they would not fit my trees without doing some “operating”. Z1910 So I clipped them apart with my little micro tip scissors- YES! this is important to mention because they are Non-Stick Micro-Tip Scissors. These little gems are already sticky, so using these scissors made it a breeze! I lined the trees and added the star. Z1836 Now the second block. This could not have been any easier!! 2013-11-22_16-58-06_298 I glued the beautifully designed chipboard piece and added some liquid applique to look like snow.  Z308 This stuff is so fun! You apply it and then use your Craft Heater to dry it. As it dries it becomes puffy. Both the heater and the Liquid Applique are retiring so get them now if you want them. Then I added some bling with our Sparkles Clear Assortment. Z1752_400X400   It really is that easy when you use stuff that is meant to go together- just like Garanimals! Come back tomorrow and I will have another handmade wooden block project for ya! It’s a good thing I took a photo of it because it sold right away!!!   Shop for your crafting supplies now by clicking the box below! 1312-rediscover-ctmh-fb-profile Until Next Time- Capture Life! These photos are of my cousin’s new baby, Magnolia with her daddy, Tim. This stamp set could not have been more perfect for this moment of bringing baby home from the hospital.
20131130_204856
This set was a lot of fun to work with as 3 of the stamps coordinate with shapes on our CTMH Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge. I used the Handle With Care stamp as a background stamp and as a title. I chose the Chantilly Paper because it pulled in all of the colors of the photos.  I also couldn’t resist embellishing with the pink glitter gems.

I had to use my favorite alphabet set,Keyboard Uppercase to make the colorful title. Everyone needs this set, just sayin’!

Shop For a Cause and Help Local Children with Autism

11 / 8 / 138 / 10 / 15

I obviously have strong ties to this cause. I also happen to love this organization!  Autism Solution Pieces is a Christian non-profit that operates right here in Racine, WI.  They offer education, grants, support and so much more all through the love of Christ.   You can read more about their mission here. When I was asked if I would participate in an online extravaganza this month, I was thrilled.  Knowing the constraints that are put on families who need help I couldn’t say no.  I was blessed to receive 3 years of in home intensive therapy for my Sofie that was paid for by the State. It was paramount to the progress she has made over the years.  Sadly, not all families qualify and not all children respond to one type of therapy. In addition to all the red tape, the policies and programs are always changing.  Many parents of children with Autism are financially strapped and are in desperate need. So, ASP is a place where families can get scholarships for all sorts of therapies, equipment and treatments. Plus, they offer great events for fellowship and fun! If this warms your heart and you would like to help these children and families all you need to do is shop online! Each vendor is giving a percentage back to ASP. CLICK BELOW FOR A PRINTABLE FILE   ASP Online Extravaganza Pic Be sure to place your order no later than November 30th and be sure to contact the rep and let them know it is for ASP. Big Lessons Don’t Always Happen in Church, But Sometimes They Do

11 / 6 / 131 / 15 / 16

(Warning, this is a from the heart, no holds barred, feel like I am called to share this kind of post.) It amazes me. No matter what I claim or how faithful I try to be, I still mess up.  Not that I am aiming to be perfect, but in this case I sure think I could have done better.  It started like this… This past Sunday Sofie proclaimed that she wanted to be in big church with us.  My immediate reaction is why don’t you want to go to kid’s church? I want to be with you she says. Although this should have made me feel all warm and fuzzy, it made me panic instead. I reacted based on past experiences.  I started laying down the law and telling her how she better behave and I am not dealing with her if she doesn’t.  We got to church and we were sitting and waiting. The hand biting started as well as other behaviors that were questionable. I actually leaned over to Scott and began to complain about how this is my time with God and she better not ruin it!  Definitely not a shining MOM moment! Then the music started and we all stood up. Before I knew it Sofie was standing right next to me. She was brushed up against my arm!  I was tempted to reach out and touch her, but I feared this would upset the apple cart. So, I just looked at her and smiled.  She then did something so rare.  She wrapped her arms around my waist. I in turn put my arms around her.  We stayed that way for the entire song. I rested my head on hers and sang away. She let me.  When the music stopped she looked up at me with such love in her eyes, all I could do was tear up. I was so embarrassed. How could I claim to be faithful and trust God and then react the way I did to my child? Right then and there I asked for forgiveness.  I also recalled a message we had gotten in our Mom to Mom group that week at church. It had brought me so much peace. You are not responsible  I prayed for strength and faithfulness.  Instead of guilt and shame a wave of gratitude washed over me.  I am thankful for knowing God’s grace, forgiveness and unconditional love. I was also reminded that with God all things are POSSIBLE! Even a moment in church that I was dreading, turned out to be a gift.  A gift I would have missed. Thank you God for delivering that message through my always smiling, sometimes nose picking, hand biting, tantrum throwing autistic 11 year old that YES! Through YOU all things are possible. It is in these small moments I am reminded that YOU keep your promises.  All I have to do is remain faithful. After those few precious moments, that I wanted to freeze, things pretty much went back to normal.  The rest of the service she grabbed all of the papers and envelopes and wrote on them. She sat on the floor facing the people behind us, picked her nose, refused to blow it even after I offered her a napkin.  Instead of being embarrassed and frustrated, I was trying to be gentle and loving just like my Heavenly Father is with me when I embarrass him. Which I am pretty sure I easily did earlier that morning. Really I am sure I do on a daily basis.  But he doesn’t see that. He sees through to my heart. He knows I am trying to remain faithful while He does His work. Come to think of it, it’s really nice that I don’t have to play God. That all I have to do is TRUST HIM! For that I am ever so grateful.  Thanks for letting me share. Until Next Time- Capture Life! Sarita
