Autism Through Her Sister’s Eyes

4 / 2 / 141 / 14 / 16

Savana wrote this at age 10 for an Anthology Contest.  The theme was “The Future”.   It was published, but never shared.  Sometimes we forget how it all looks through a sibling’s eyes.  A lot of things have gotten better, (Sofie was potty trained fully about 2 years ago) some things have gotten worse.  But what has not changed is the love she has for Sofie.

Do You Ever Wonder

By Savana Schraeder

11/7/08

Do you ever wonder what the future holds? I wonder all the time. My sister, Sofie, was diagnosed with PDDNOS two years ago. That means she is on the Autism Spectrum. Those two years have been very emotional years. We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve been through tough times, and I wouldn’t change a thing. There have been days where we want to ring her neck, exhibit A: Sofie sees a McDonald’s sign and starts screaming chicken nuggets and won’t stop until you pull over to the drive through. Exhibit B: Sofie goes out the emergency exit door at McDonald’s causing the alarm to go off. Children were crying, parents were looking, and Sofie was laughing. Then there have been days where she’s sitting around looking so cute and I think to myself {I couldn’t have asked for a better sister.} Sofie is six years old. She was diagnosed with PDDNOS when she was only four years old. She is in her second year of kindergarten. Every morning we hope and pray that she will fly out of bed and come downstairs with a smile on her face and no spectrum. But, we know that’s never going to happen. I am usually the one who thinks that. Mom asks me, “If Sofie didn’t have autism our life would be pretty boring wouldn’t it?” We do all that we can for her with proper medications, special teachers and therapists. We even buy her special materials. But even that’s not enough. Sometimes all you need is support, guidance and empathy. Those things can fill you up in a heartbeat. Those are the things we give her every day of her life. Every body she sees thinks she’s normal. But, eventually we have to tell them, when necessary that she’s not. She’s in her own little world 24-7. She makes everyone she sees smile. She doesn’t care what anyone thinks. She is always happy and brings joy to others with her infectious smile. On my gloomiest days Sofie can turn my mood around in a heartbeat. I guess you could say she is our inspiration, our momentum, our influence. Sometimes when you have something to share or tell something you just can’t wait can you? Well, that’s kind of how it is with hopes and dreams. You have to tell somebody right? Otherwise you lose your train of thought. Now with Sofie it is a little different. She doesn’t know how to process it all. So you wonder too what is going on in her head? Nobody knows. Sofie doesn’t have any hopes or dreams or goals in life that we know of. She focuses on the present and what is happening now. Like, what is for lunch, what is on TV at night or is Daddy coming home. We are the ones left to wonder while she lives in today. When I watch her a lot of questions come to mind. Will she go to prom? Will she graduate high school? Will she go to college? My Mom just asks will she ever get potty trained. We ask all these questions, but will we ever know. We will only know when the time comes. Don’t get me wrong, Sofie is succeeding. Each day is another step and we make sure we celebrate small victories. Like when she speaks a full sentence, or recognizes a letter. Those small steps are big for Sofie. They are big for all of us. I read a quote the other day and it said, “We may not have it all together, but together we have it all”. I love that saying because it shows that no matter what, we still are a family. That is how it is in our life. Life throws us twists and turns when we least expect it. We make it through by helping each other out with everything like homework, chores, cooking dinner, and so many other things I can’t list. We never know what the next day will bring. We can’t tell our future. Come to think of it, nobody can. We may make plans or have something mapped out, but maybe we should live in the moment like Sofie. All she has is this moment and she likes to make the best out of every chance she’s got. The point I’m trying to make is live your life this moment and let God take care of the rest. We know He will for Sofie. In the meantime I will wonder, hope and dream for her.   This is now.  Savana is turning 16 next month and Sofie will be 12 in June. Today is Autism Awareness Day. Savana baked blue sprinkle cookies to entice her friends to wear blue.  She tweeted, texted and Facebooked it out.  Sofie saw the cookies and in her sweetest Sofie voice said “ Can I have 2 cookies cuz I have Autism?”  She spoke so clearly, we just started laughing.  Then I said, “I must get at least a dozen since I am the Mom of a child with Autism.”  But the truth is, who needs cookies when you have times like this.  Like Savana wrote above, we just live in the moment. 20140401_103058

These amazing photos were taken courtesy of Gigi’s Joy Photography. Trust me it took a professional to capture this moment. It’s all complimentary for a www.storiesofAutism.com project.  Much more to share this month.

CTMH April Stamp of the Month, Balloon Talk- Decorated Frame

4 / 1 / 148 / 27 / 15

Balloon Talk- Stamp Set
2014 - April SOTM - Stamp Image for Blog Hop - edited
1404-sotm
I needed to make a special gift for the girl’s birthday party I am doing this coming weekend.  I like to create a unique piece of art, so I decided on a frame.   The Balloon Talk Set was perfect for celebrating an 11 year old!
20140331_154602-1

For the inside Kraft frame I arranged the individual word stamps on a block and created the background with colors; Lagoon, Hollyhock, Gypsy,

Words: Happy, you, me, us, yes, cool, been there, done that

Edged the outisde of the kraft frame with Colonial White Pigment Ink. I also stamped over the word “me” with the same ink, to make the word pop.

I clustered the word balloons together by layering them.  I used a combination of washi tape covered dimensional elements and stamped and cut out images.  Some of the stamps coordinate with the CTMH Cricut Artiste Cartridge as well.

My favorite part was decorating the outside of the frame using the Gold Polka Dot Washi Tape. It added so much and tied the design all together. I can’t wait to see what my little friend thinks of it!

Now it’s off to Jill’s Blog to see what she created.  Happy hopping!

Until Next Time-

How to Use Text as a Background in Studio J Digital Scrapbooking

3 / 25 / 148 / 25 / 15

Technorati Tags: Ariana,CTMH,2 page scrapbook layout,Studio J. digital scrapbooking, song lyrics

I am so excited with how this turned out!  I created this layout in Studio J so I was able to be really creative!  First off, I LOVE that Savana chose a song with such a powerful  message.  So, I wanted to capture that, but there was so much to say about this moment.  The lyrics were just background music to her accomplishment.  Savana_TriM_Blessed Scrapper I used: Kit: Ariana Pattern: Through the Lens How I did it: 1. Click on text and photo areas 2. Drag a journaling box over and size it to the page.  In my case I ended up only using it on part of the page. 3. Choose your font and color.  Make sure the box scale font is unchecked.  I chose a size 26 in Fountain Pen. 3. I chose a shortcut and copy and pasted the text over and over in the same large text box. 4.  When you are happy with it, right click the text box and send to back. 5.  If you see the text is over something, just right click the area it is covering and bring it to the front.  It will take some playing with, but you’ll get the hang of it! If you have any questions, just leave a comment and ask! I am happy to help! Want to create you own layout?  Head on over to my website, create an account or sign in with your current CTMH account and get going! Until Next Time- Capture Life! Sarita

Thirty One Room to Grow Utility Bin as a 12×12 Paper Organizer

3 / 22 / 142 / 5 / 18

After my last post on craft supply organization, which you can read here I realized I didn’t say much about my “Room to Grow Utility Bin” Shelving System.  Here are a few more pictures.  First off, I have used these white grids for so many different things.  I think they are very handy, but I wanted it to look pretty too.   So, I had an idea… I knew the dimensions of the RTG and the shelves so I thought it would work.  It did!!   20140113_104851                    20140113_104903 It gives it a nice flat surface for storing my large organizer from CTMH on top as well.  As I showed in the last post, the handle on the RTG was perfect for attaching my Timeless Beauty Organizer that holds all of my basic craft supplies.   20140316_174653 Now I know you are going to ask about my paper holders.  These are from Cropper Hopper and I have had them for a while.  On my Close to my Heart website, you can get these great paper organizers  that work well inside it. They are made of sturdy plastic and are see through.  They work great in the holders from Cropper Hopper. I also like our 13” x 13 1/4” bags for storing paper.  They are the same bags CTMH paper kits and Workshop Kits come in. Resealble Bags Paper Storage

I hope this inspired you to get your papers organized.  You can check out a huge selection of organization goodies at my website

The BEST Basic Craft Kit Organizer EVER!

3 / 16 / 142 / 5 / 18

My most favorite all time use for the Timeless Beauty Organizer from Thirty One is to  use it as a Timeless Craft Organizer!  My “go to”, “must have” supplies at are always at my fingertips! INCLUDING my cartridge overlays, books and carts for my MOST FAVORITE CTMH Cricut Cartridges! 2013-09-27_10-44-30_812 AND it attaches to the handle of my other Thirty One organizer, the Room to Grow Utility Bin! This one I am using vertically. 20140113_110307  20140113_104851

Here is the front.  I was able to fit 2 cubes. I use that as a paper organizer. Click here to see how I filled it up with my scrapbook paper.

I also use another room to grow utility bin for my paper products in the house. However, I use it horizontally, which is how I have seen it used for toy storage, pantry items, games, clothes, etc… So, this may not be pretty, but it is practical.   But we built a shelf in the stairwell to our field stone basement. Just a clever way to add more storage. It was always such a mess until I placed a Room to Grow Utility Bin on it. I store all of my paper products in there. 20140316_131608 20140316_131631 So, I say if it works for you, go for it! I hope this inspires you to see organization in a new and different way!

March CTMH Stamp of the Month Blog Hop

3 / 1 / 149 / 26 / 15

.
Welcome to our CTMH Stamp of the Month Blog Hop.  If you came from
Tracy’s Blog then you are on the right path!

March is coming in like a woman scorned here is Wisconsin!  Forget the lion.  The lion, he’s got nothing on HER!  Well it’s a good thing I can escape to my Happy Place, A.K.A my Creative Cottage.  Considering our home has been more like a sick ward than a “happy place” over the last 2 weeks. LOL!Open-mouthed smileSo, I have been more of a nursemaid than a crafter, but then we all wear many hats don’t we?
You can too when you create with this very unique set of 7 stamps.
2014 - March SOTM - Happy Place SOTM Edited
The art department at CTMH created this layout, card and adorable box which can be used for many different things- photos, recipes and your PML cards!  If you have a little doll to celebrate or a sweetie that loves dolls, this is a really delicious set.  The Russian Dolls also would make great accents if you were lucky enough to be at the Olympics in Sochi and had those memories to document.

Here is a closer look at the Like Mother, Like Daughter Card.
I just love all of the details nestled in each of these projects.  This card showcases a great way to add stitching and so much more.Card Project 1

Scrapbooking With Special Needs Kids is EASY with Studio J!

2 / 16 / 148 / 10 / 15

BLAME IT ON MY ADHD!

(Look Ma! A whole blog post I never published!! I just found this today as I was working on a different project.  So, I thought I would share.

Original Post Date: June 2011. (oops!)

So to say I was a little discouraged when Sofie broke 3 of the covers on my ink pads in like macht 3 seconds would be an understatement. I didn’t care about the ink pads. I was just bummed that she really wants to be scrapbooking with me, but it’s too overwhelming with her autism and ADHD.

Then there was this scissor incident that was followed by her 3rd DIY haircut.

So, I was a little leary about giving her scissors.

So, I had the BIGGEST AHA MOMENT ever at Studio J Boot Camp. Sofie loves the computer and she can drag and drop, so why not give her a go on  Studio J?  We decided that we should focus on keyboarding instead of hand writing because that just isn’t coming.  So, she even typed her own title. I helped her sound it out and find the keys.  Well, I did and here are the results.

The best part is that I did not have to worry about all the stickers she was “wasting” or where she put them. It was all hers. I may have added one or two things.  Forgive me, I am a Mom.

Now she can’t wait for the print to come. We ordered a Quick Pic Album for her and will use it as a What I Did Last Summer… book.

Now, not only is that good for her self esteem and confidence.  It is already increasing her language development.   Her whole life is in pictures and she is so visual. She won’t spark a conversation as a rule. But when she is triggered visually, she can recall things I never knew.  Naturally, she points out crazy stuff in a picture like the sippy cup in the background or shoes. She is obsessed with shoes and always has been.  When she sees herself in these layouts, it’s like I am giving her a memory she otherwise wouldn’t have.  Her childhood memories will lie in the pages of her scrapbook, but not necessarily her mind.  Not to mention she is highly motivated to look at pictures of herself!

I see a lot of Studio J Scrapbooking for her this summer. She can be productive on the computer and have something to show for all her work at the end.

XOXO Valentine Banner Made With Scraps

2 / 14 / 148 / 10 / 15

I made this simple XOXO Valentine banner to hang in my kitchen on my old barn window.  Would you believe I made it with some scraps? 20140214_091202 Decorating a simple shape like a triangle is a perfect way to use up scraps.  My background was made by stamping, adding strips of paper and random left over Cricut cuts. This is why I always cut more shapes than I need to when I use my Cricut.  I love being able to just grab things and create. For the large letters I used my chipboard x and o (positive and negative space) which were tucked away in my alpha organizer. Love that thing! Stamps: (Retired) Whoo Loves You (Constant Campaign) (owls, polka dots, You’re Sweet) “You’re Sweet” fit perfectly on the retired canvas badge button. If you need owls we have a new set, B1450 Owls for only $9.95 (Retired) Sarita Workshop on the Go Stamp- Argyle image (Retired) February Stamp for xo border. ( You could also use an X and an O from any of your alpha sets. It was so easy to fill in the gaps and embellish with red shimmer trim and Ruby Chevron washi tape. So, save those scraps! Plus! don’t be afraid to mix the old with the new and create something fun and fabulous!! With Love to you all and a Happy Valentine’s Day! Until Next Time- Capture Life! Sarita

Happify Your Relationship This Valentines and Beyond

2 / 14 / 149 / 26 / 15

Happy Valentine’s Day! This is my gift to you.  Some reality on the science behind happy relationships.  Yes, I am a hopeless romantic, but I also know that it all takes work. You make choices everyday how you will react to things, what “light” you will put your spouse in, positive or negative. For some this comes a little easier and for others you really have to work at happiness. Have you heard of Happify?  I became a Happify Pioneer about a year ago. It has been interesting.  The idea is to complete different science based activities and games to increase your happiness. You then share them with your network and share them with other “Happifiers” and enjoy increased happiness. They recently created this awesome graphic and asked me to share it.  So, here you go! Enjoy! and I would LOVE to know what you think about it!   The Science Behind a Happy Relationship by Happify.com
