Announcing Exciting Changes! Creative Cottage Designs

10 / 7 / 118 / 10 / 15

I will probably sound like I am rambling, so if you can stick with me that would be great! I have been writing this blog post in my head for weeks!  As you know, my husband Scott, just retired from the Army National Guard with 20 years of service. This has been a wonderful change for our family. It is so refreshing to have him home physically and mentally!

We also just celebrated 10 years of living in our 1903 farmhouse. When we first moved in our time was spent painting, remodeling, antiquing, gardening and embracing farmhouse living. Then it quickly turned to our new baby, Sofie and raising our little family. Then Scott went off to war, Sofie was dual diagnosed with ADHD and Autism. We were just keeping our heads above water trying to keep her safe in her daily living.

Do not get me wrong. We were beyond blessed to eventually get 25 hours a week of in-home intensive therapy for Sofie. However, that alone presented us with new challenges each day. We started to feel like we were living in a bubble. The only time we really left home was to work. That is why he was so committed to helping me create the cottage. He knew it would save my sanity. Lets just say it was a step in the right direction. Ha!

Even with all of his support I was still so overwhelmed.  One day last fall when things slowed down I  remember sitting there thinking “what did I do before scrapbooking and Autism”. As it seemed they had both consumed me. I felt like I was losing myself along the way as I was just going through the motions.

That is also about the time I realized I needed some help. I just could not keep living in over drive and be the best Mom and Me that I knew God was calling me to be. I needed to make a change.  I started seeing my own therapist almost a year ago and it is the best thing I ever could have done. Through this process I learned a lot about the importance of taking care of myself . I also realized that what was ultimately holding me back was my own ADHD (imagine that!), depression and anxiety. They presented themselves in so many different ways and had permeated my life. I was exhausted from all of it and couldn’t keep living that way. As I started to work on myself little by little I was starting to see things a lot more clearly. I was embracing my life and just becoming more aware in general.

. One day I came across the Nate Berkus Show and he was talking about little things you could do on a budget from decorating to fashion.  As I watched the families he brought on talking openly about their challenges in these lean times I could relate. I loved when he showed a curbside find and what he did with it. It reminded me of the things we loved to do before life threw us a curve ball. We enjoyed going to thrift stores and Goodwill shopping, curb side picking, antiquing, rummaging and all that good stuff. I have always loved to take someone else’s trash and turn it into a treasure. Nate reminded me of my love for country and cottage living and my home again. He made being “thrifty very tres’ chic. I was inspired to get back to my old roots.

So where do you start? Goodwill of course!

Me, Trudy and Joanne

Yes, we actually did get crazy looks when we asked someone to take our picture. But that is nothing new!

I found some treasures that fit my house perfectly. It had been YEARS since I thought of my home.  (Besides just cleaning up after Sofie and her tornadic activity in every room).. A very pivotol moment for me was the day I removed the last child lock on a cabinet. After 8 years of nothing on my tables and very minimalistic decorating I felt liberated!  It was time to “wake up” our house.

Having a friend like Trudy made it very easy. I don’t know many people who light up at the word paint. (That is one chore my husband does not enjoy hates.)

Savana had been begging for a new look. So, she got it!

Picking colors was easy as looking at our CTMH cardstock swatches.

Matter of fact we chose PEAR for the walls and accented in Lagoon, Gypsy and black.

You get the picture right? I was reminded that Design principles are the same whether you are decorating a room or a scrapbook page!

If you have ever done a project like this then you know it is much like the experience of giving birth!  Even though you swear you will never do this again, as soon as the blood, sweat and tears pain is over and you look at your new baby room with so much admiration you forget all of the anguish you went through and only see the end result.  So, yeah, your crazy enough to do it again!!

Then you also know once you get bit by that bug, it’s hard to stop. Everything I saw could be painted, fixed and repurposed. I was seeing everything could be made new again. Including my life! Through paint, paper and fabric my friends and myself unlocked a world of hidden potential, talent and empowerment.

It was essentially the  $2 chairs and $5 tables that changed everything.

I guess you could say my hubby got roped in by default when we showed up with a van full of furniture and then proceeded to take over the workshop.  I could tell once he started getting involved (with power tools of course) he was having fun.  After all he was surrounded by cute, fun women girls who liked to laugh and joke around. A little bit different from what he was used to. We were starting to also feel like we were getting back to our old selves. He was pulling out his This Old House magazines and showing us ideas. He had pride written all over his face when he made a couple spice racks out of barn wood and pallets. When one of them actually sold at a flea market, he was IN!

We even stopped at a barn Sale on the way to his aunts one day and did a family pick! Ahhh, that reminded me of the good ol’ days!

We both really loved this sled. No, we don’t know what we are going to do with it.

I have always wanted my husband to be more involved in my business, but getting him to scrapbook was out of the question. However, cutting wood for blocks and signs, that’s a different story. It was perfect timing since he just retired. It gave us something to do together.

Seeing the potential of what we could do together, I had to find a way that that we could combine my Close to my Heart and Willow House businesses with this new found passion. I was also confusing people with thinking I was a store. It was time to gather it and tie it together with one big bow!

Thus Creative Cottage Designs was born.

Sharing our passion for family, home and life!

Cricut, Vinyl and Barn Wood Signs

9 / 19 / 111 / 15 / 16

I guess I really am a scrapper in more ways than one!  A few weeks ago my buddy Joanne at Joanne’s Scraps in Life found a treasure trove of wood!  I asked her to keep an eye out for pallets that we could use and she unearthed an entire burn pile behind the company her husband’s family owns.  Yes, we got some weird looks as we loaded it up! We didn’t take all of it. But we found some great barn wood.

So, I grabbed some of the wood, white paint and vinyl.  Here is the result.

How to Work With Vinyl and Paint
To give the wood the distressed look I painted lightly with white acrylic paint.
I used the negative space of the dress form from the Cricut “Wall Decor and More” as a stencil.  The bonus was when I lifted the stencil and it removed some of the paint to add to my distressed vibe.
Then I filled the space in with red paint and black for the dress stand.  Paint gave it a great texture. It almost looks like a wrap dress.
The words I cut from vinyl using my Cricut. I used the Gypsy Font.

This was straight up vinyl.  The next one I make will have bling as well. I wonder who might like this?

After a conversation with my girl Fancy Melissa, this sign had to be made.  She is right! Sometimes you just have to be bold to get the results you want!  I did something bold today.  Doesn’t this sign make you want to do something BOLD??

Halloween Luminary and Treat Holder DIY

9 / 8 / 1110 / 14 / 15

Can you believe this super fab cone treat holder was made with just 3 chipboard pieces from a CTMH My Creations Banner?  I was so inspired when I spotted something similar at convention. I knew immediately I had to make one with our elegant yet sassy Mischief Paper.

Once I covered the pieces with pattern paper I chose a solid cardstock for the inside.  I stamped a spooky Halloween scene from the Captured Moments set to add interest and fun to the inside. So even when your treats are gone, there is still some fun leftover.

Liquid Glass and a cardstock hinged border was perfect to hold the 3 triangles together. Next step was to re-punch the holes in the banner before I assembled it so I could lace my black grosgrain ribbon through.

When I was putting it together I thought how cool it would look with window cutouts.

Here is how it turned out.

Halloween Luminary_cat_My Creative Cottage

Here it is lit up with a battery operated tea light. Isn’t it so pretty?

Halloween Luminary_my creations banner_my creations banner_My Creative Cottage

How I did it

I used my Cricut to cut openings into the paper triangle and used a craft knife to cut through the chipboard banner.

Next, I stamped on vellum with archival ink.  Staz On would be perfect.  I attached the vellum and added some finishing touches like the border, the ribbon and the flower at the bottom.  I used ribbon to make a hinge on the sides to hold them together.

Can you just imagine the possibilities with all the holidays coming up?  Don’t miss a thing!  Sign up for my newsletter and you will have updates sent directly to your in box.

Until Next Time-

Happy Creating!

September Blog Hop- Limited Edition Message Board

9 / 1 / 118 / 25 / 15

Thanks for stopping by for the September Stamp of the month Blog Hop.  If you have come from Amy’s Blog you are on the right path. I hope you are ready to sit back and enjoy some great creations using this versatile stamp set. It is perfect for scrapbookers and card makers.  I can see some great holiday invitations with this. However, I chose to make a functional dry erase board for my daughter Soife, who is autistic and is having a rough time with transitioning back to school and adjusting to a new therapy team.

I found an old frame that I got at Ikea a long time ago.  I gave it a new life by distressing it with black Staz On ink and I added some opaques. I used Roxy Level 2 for the background paper.I also stamped on Cricut die cut images with the Limited Edition Stamp Set.  Sized at 3/4″ they were perfect for stamping the titles, “remember” and calendar.

I used the tag as a backdrop for a beautiful sentiment from the Pair a Phrase stamp set that is on special this month only.

It reads, “Just living is not enough.
One must have sunshine, freedom and a little flower.
– Hans Christian Anderson.

I also added some flowers from the Spring Blossom collection, pearl opaques and a funky flourish. To get the flourish all I had to do was push the font layer feature, shift and on the CTMH Cricut Art Philosophy Cartridge

Now on to Dawn’s Blog for some more inspiration.

Don’t forget! This Limited Edition Stamp Set is only $17.95 and available through Sept. 30.  When you spend $50 on the products you love, you can get it for only $5. Spend $75 and get the Pair a Phrase double stamp set free.

August Stamp of the Month- WICKED! Witch is In Sign

8 / 1 / 118 / 25 / 15

If If you have come here from Adeline’s Blog I am sure she scared up something fabulous for ya and you are on the right track.

There were so many choices, but I decided a jump start on a Halloween decoration wouldn’t be a bad thing.  I chose to make a sign with this set of 9 stamps. I attached the colonial cardstock to a piece of chipboard (actually the back of the desk pad).

I used the Cricut Art Philosophy Cartridge for the:
Background design
Tag Frame
Black flower
Gold Rush FlowersStamp for title: Old World Alphabet ( if this doesn’t scream vintage, I don’t know what does!)

The flowers were so much fun! All I had to do was roll them up and glue them down with a little bit of Liquid Glass.  I added the Glitz Glitter Gel for some bling. I also added Bitty Sparkles to give the kitty and the witch some sass.  Not like this set doesn’t exude that!  Oh, I also used our new Bling Assortment that includes the buttons and pins.  I also used our adorable new Decor Journaling Spots for the In and Out signs. I replaced the string on the tag with bling buttons and wrapped the string around the pocket instead.

Head on over to Debra’s Blog for some more great inspiration!

Pencils wrapped in coordinating paper for the 1st day of school
Gift Cards
Candy
Little notes to encourage your child.

What would you put in it? Leave me a comment and I’ll put you in a drawing for a FREE Typeset paper pack.

So, you might be asking yourself why a coming out party for Cricut? It’s time for true confessions!

I have a confession to make. I have been in the Cricut closet for the last 5 years. I will never forget the day I bought my Cricut from QVC the first day it was available. Yes, I was one of those crazy ladies in her pajamas waiting for the Special of the Day to be announced at midnight!  Shortly after I was the proud owner of “George”, and “Doodletype” too.  Let me say I NEVER would of sold it on EBAY although it was going for a pretty penny. It was a well sought after exclusive cartridge!

I was so amazed by the possibilities.  I was hooked. I used it for my classes with my former scrapbooking company.

This was one of the first projects I posted on the Cricut board.

We even got professionally trained by Provo Craft back in 2006.  I loved giving seasonal die cuts to my hostesses and it was simple and fun to do.

I was such a Cricut evangelist. My customers and friends know this. I can guarantee that 90% of them own a Cricut and a Gypsy now because of me and my enabling!

I was

I clearly remember being on the phone with my friend, Brenda one day. I was washing dishes and I could hear the Cricut sound in the background on her end.   I was immediately alarmed.  She was playing with Cricut and I was doing chores. There was definitely something wrong with this picture.  I was actually envious. That’s when I knew I had a problem. (hee hee!)

Yet, when I joined CTMH in 2007 I felt like I was “cheating.” I still used my Cricut of course for class supplies. I adored Tags, Bags, Boxes and More.  That is what really lived in my Cricut.  I always thought that if I could teach Cricut clases, I’d be in heaven.  This was one of my favorite Cricut projects I made when I joined CTMH.

But as time went on my business was taking off and I didn’t have as much time to play. I did buy the Expression and of course the day the Gypsy came out on HSN it was mine!  I have been loving the vinyl projetcs I’ve created from my car decal to the sign I made to hang outside my house. But I never really shared them except with my “locals” who were aware of my obsession.
THEN it was the BIG DADDY of them all! CTMH announced a new Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge. It was released at our Convention. Remember when I almost fell off my chair?
Now you know why! I could profess my undying love for my Cricut with reckless abandon!  I’ll even let you in on a little secret.  I have been Beta testing the yet to be released Cricut Craft Room which you will have access to for FREE coming later this fall!
If you love Cricut like I do and NEED to order this cartridge, contact me!
After all, who could live without……700 images that include:
6 different spiral cut shapes for you to roll into the 3-d flowers.
17 different borders
100 card bases (in shapes such as circles, bracketed squares and rectangles and many of them have little peek-a-boo windows cut in them with different shapes)
50 tags,
50 labels and so much more! PLUS, several of our stamp sets coordinate with the shapes!!

So, now that you heard my story, what was your first moment with Cricut? How did you first hear about it? Do you remember that magical feeling of your first cut?

I would love to hear about your first experience with Cricut!

Until then, be blessed!

I am Home from CTMH Convention! (in more ways than one)

7 / 20 / 118 / 10 / 15

Now that I am back from convention everyone is asking me how was it?
Ummmmm…do you have all day? Probably not, so I will try to make a short recap.

I will start with this cool sign I saw walking through LAX Airport. If the supposed “Carmagedon” wasn’t bad enough, the airport was under construction.  Rather than thinking how inconvenienced I was as a first time visitor, I was really inspired by the message. Instead of saying “hey, we’re sorry and we know this sucks”, they let their vision and purpose be known.
I thought this would be a great theme for my team retreat.  I also said a silent prayer that I would feel all of these things after convention.  I have been in a bit of a transitional stage as my best customers have become my best friends and team members.  So, this has changed the dynamic of my business. In a wonderful way of course!

When we walked into your room and saw these adorable rommie gifts from Melissa we knew it was going to be a great week.  Not only that, but to walk into a room with a bed made was a great indicator as well.(grin)

When Tracey joined us she gave us this adorabl mini album. Trust me when I say, the gifts kept coming.

I went on to spend an entire week with some of the nicest, most caring, fun and crazy girls I know.  It is so refreshing to have friends who truly accept you and love you unconditionally.  I know to find that is a rare treasure so I don’t take it lightly.  I also treasure the new people I met.  I just love hearing everyone’s stories. They are all in the CTMH family for different reasons. Some do it just so they can do a hobby they love at a discount AND get to to play and party at convention every year. Who wouldn’t want that?

The next day we all hung out by the pool, (this is where the unconditional friend part comes in hee hee) and got caught up on life in general.
After a relaxing afternoon we walked right out our door and into Downtown Disney.  We celebrated being together by indulging in some yummy drinks and a mean guacamole courtesy of Gloria at Tortilla Jos

Melissa, Trudy, Tracey and Me.

The weather was fabulous.  We were pleasantly surprised with upper 60’s and 70’s.  We continued to walk towards Disneyland to see the fireworks. As it turned out you could pretty much see them every night from everywhere.

The next day was Leadership Day.  Managers and above spent the day getting the nuts and bolts of new programs and improved products.  I love to learn, so I took a ton of notes.  I was really proud of Melissa when she presented her topic.  Just like a proud mama I was so happy watching her that I forgot to take a picture.  OOPS!  We also had a swanky lunch and a super cute create and take with a brand new stamp set, Love Life. Love it!!
By evening the rest of Melissa’s team arrived.  So, we went to the park and ran around like little kids! The rides were so fun. Except for Space Mountain. Trudy brought up a good point. Why don’t they serve Gingerale at an amusement park?
It’s really interesting how waiting in line talking and laughing with your friends makes the time go by much faster than when you are with your family. I’m just sayin’.  Disney was amazing and it was hard to beleive that we still had the whole convention in front of us.
When I entered the Grand Ballroom for our General Session and saw this on the screen I knew there were great things in front of us.
This was the scene on Day 1. Picture 1200 consultants anxiously awaiting the BIG announcment. With this backdrop how could it not be
mystical and magical?

We had all the excitement and anticipation of a child on Christmas morning.  We knew what we had put on our wish lists, but just couldn’t wait to open the presents to see what we would get!

Drum roll please….
What a grand enterance! Mickey escorted our fabulous founder and leader, Jeanette Lynton onto the stage.
We were treated to a Disney show opening.  When Cinderella came out we all sighed like 5 yr old girls.  It was incredibly magical. Why does Disney make you all emotional?
Our NEW mission statement was revealed.  I love it.
Our VP’s acted out several skits to reveal new information.  As they opened our presents one at a time it became quite eveident,
they work hard and they play hard. What a comical group!
All the announcements were so exciting and we pretty much did get
everything on our list!

The whole time was amazing.  Over the next few days it was quite evident through our business classes, Extravagana and creative sessions that CTMH listened to their customers and consultants.  CTMH have almost completely reinvnted themselves.   New products and new programs guaranteed to make our crafting faster. simpler. easier.
We celebrated with an awards night.   Melissa’s team member and my good friend, Tracey won the Rising Star Award. We were all so happy for her
 and Melissa.
The dinner was delicious and I was so excited that another team member, Shirley joined us.  So, I can’t wait to see who joins us next year. Maybe you?
Although I have a lot more to share, I will end this here.
After such a fulfilling week that helped me grow professionally and personally I saw that sign on my way back through the airport.

It just made me smile. I knew my prayer had been answered. Not only did I  feel all of those things and more, I knew without a doubt,
I had found my home with CTMH.

If you want to feel all these same things, then join us!
Sign up with Close to my Heart and sign on to a life filled with friends, fun and many blessings.  It’s only $99 to get the newest consultant kit right now. That’s such a little investment compared to the reward.
If you have any questions,
I would love to chat with you and help you find your place in our family.

Welcome Home!!!

Blessings-
Sarita
